Alternative Endowment

The “Alternative Endowment Coalition” is a community of people committed to creating a progressive, institutional, and sustainable system for change at New York University with financial levers in solidarity with campaigns across the university with the following values:

• Freedom from oppression and imperialism
• Freedom of speech and expression
• Prioritization of student voices
• Maintenance of a critical perspective on an extractive capitalist economy
• Prioritization of human rights over profit

The administrative decisions that New York University makes do not necessarily represent the values of progressive-minded students at the school.

The “community of people” that are associated with the Alternative Endowment are active proponents for progressive changes within the institution that might better align the decisions and structures with the future that these progressive students hope to build. They are dissatisfied with decisions that have been made and hope to propose alternative actions and structural solutions to these issues. They hope to use their voice, as students, alumni, and concerned community members, to openly express the value of these alternative visions for the school’s future. They are bound together into an association, “The NYU Alternative Endowment Coalition” to express those ideas, fundraise on their behalf, and collectively support thought leaders at NYU and in the NYC community. The Coalition is led by a Student Board and managed by Fund Organizers.

The NYU Alternative Endowment Coalition is responsible for organizing, creating and employing the Alternative Endowment Fund in order to empower student voices at NYU.

We fundraise on behalf of active students at NYU by asking dissatisfied students, alumni, and of the greater NYC network to support our collective demands against the university. In order to empower these students we withhold the funds donated until University admin agree to meet the specific requests of the collective student board.
